* Traditional Japanese Tableware
This collection includes 30,000 pieces dating from the Azuchi
Momoyama Period(1576-1600) to the beginning of the Showa Period(1926-1989).
The main part of the collection is made up of tableware from the
end of the Edo Period(1603-1867). From chinaware and ceramics
to glassware, ironware and lacquerware, this collection exposes
visitors to a wide variety of pieces from many places of origin
in Japan and time periods covering hundreds of years.
Tableware used in everyday life, including tea bowls, sake bottles,
plates, bowls, trays, etc., make up the bulk of this collection.
Most pieses date back from the middle of the Edo Period(1603-1867)
to the beginning of the Meiji Period(1868-1912). These tableware,
mostly pottery, were used in daily Japanese life and were collected
from every region of the country.
Also included are pieces make of pressed glass, and art which
was introduced to Japan during the Maiji Period.
The theme of the exhibition changes twice a year.
